Create custom application launcher in Unity

The Ubuntu Unity shell does no longer have a convenient way to create custom application launchers like we had in Gnome 2. It is still possible using the following procedure:
1. Create a .desktop file using:
gnome-desktop-item-edit --create-new ~/Applications
2. Drag & drop the .desktop file onto the panel
